Discovering & Exploring with Chesterton Community College

For the past three years University of Cambridge Museums have been supporting Chesterton Community College to run Bronze & Silver Arts Awards, (a nationally recognised qualification). For the first time this year we decided to try running the two introductory levels of the Arts Award, Discover and Explore, with two groups of students who at times struggled to engage with school.

The Museum of Zoology and Fitzwilliam Museum ran an animation project with 40 Year 7 pupils over a six-week period in which they explored the museum collections and basic animation techniques. All 40 students achieved a Discover Arts Award.

The Fitzwilliam Museum also delivered a six-week project looking specifically at Impressionism and how to read and understand paintings. Students were able to try painting in an impressionist style; they really enjoyed working in the studio and using professional materials. The young people also took part in a drama workshop during which they told the story of one of the paintings on display. The 18 students involved all achieved an Explore Arts Award.

This is the first time that the College had worked with the University of Cambridge Museums to deliver Discover and Explore Arts Awards. We all learnt a lot from the experience and are excited about delivering an Explore Arts Award next year, to the 40 Year 7 students who have just achieved their Discover Award..
